An outdoor fireplace is a masonry structure, not a garden ornament. It wants a footing that will not shift, a firebox shaped to throw heat forward rather than straight up, and a flue tall enough to carry smoke away from where people are sitting. Get the last one wrong and it works beautifully on a still evening and smokes you out on every other one.
